Day 10 (cont.) - Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood, St. Petersburg

The interior of the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood is covered in magnificent mosaics and the entire building is stunning. After the Czars, the Soviet rule pushed atheism so many cathedrals were destroyed. Church on the Spilled Blood was used to store cabbage and, during WWII, bodies of soldiers. Fortunately, it has been restored to its former glory.

The monument behind which are the stones where Alexander II died after an assassin exploded a bomb. This is where Alexander 'spilled blood'.

The granite floor.

With such detail, it's difficult to remember these are mosaics, made up of tiny individual squares.

An example of a mosaic before and after restoration.

Jesus in the ceiling of one of the spires.
