The original Broadway production of Hello, Dolly! opened on January 16, 1964, starring Carol Channing as Dolly Levi. It also starred Charles Nelson Reilly and Eileen Brennan. It won ten Tony Awards that year, winning in ten categories.
It debuted in Detroit in November 1963 before moving to Broadway the following January.
When Channing left the show, Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey and Ethel Merman all appeared in the title role.
