Michael J. McCulley, born August 4, 1943, in San Diego, California, went into space aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-34) in October 1989. He enlisted in the Navy after graduating from high school and served on a diesel-powered submarine and two nuclear-powered submarines. He also received pilot training before being selected by NASA in May 1984.
He retired from NASA in 1990.
