Gordo, a squirrel monkey was launched by the US Army December 13, 1958. His rocket reached an altitude of 500 km, but a "mechanical error" prevented the parachutes from opening upon re-entry. The rocket crashed into the south Atlantic Ocean and Gordo's body was never found.
