Sputnik 9, with Chernushka, launched 1961

Chernushka, Sputnik 9

Sputnik 9, or as the Soviets named it Korabi-Sputnik 4, was launched March 9, 1961 with Chernushka (Blackie), a black terrier-mix.  Also along for the ride were a mannequin named Ivan Ivanovich, a guinea pig and some mice.

The flight made one orbit and re-entered over the Soviet Union during its first pass.  Ivan was ejected as part of the ejection seat test.  Chernushka and the rest of the mammals were recovered safe and sound.
