"Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" released 1977

The blockbuster from George Lucas that started it all, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, was released in theaters May 25, 1977.  We were all asking what happened to episodes I-III.  The epic saga starred Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.

Expected to be a bomb, it won six Academy Awards: Best Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects and of course Best Music, Original Score.  It also won a Special Achievement Award for Ben Burtt for his sound effects creations for alien and robot voices.

It was nominated for four more Oscars: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Alec Guinness, Best Director and Best Writing for George Lucas.
