Richard "Dick" Scobee, born May 19, 1939 in Cle Elum, Washington, was commander of the Challenger (STS-51-L) when it exploded after liftoff January 28, 1986.
He had been in space previously aboard the Challenger (STS-41-C) as pilot in April 1984. The mission lasted almost 7 days.
