In the wee hours of the morning, tomorrow January 31, 2018, a rare celestial event will occur. People living on the west coast, Alaska, and the Hawai'ian islands will get to witness a "Super Blue Blood Moon". For those of us on the east coast, well...we probably won't.
This full moon is special for three reasons:
- It is a "supermoon" which means the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit and about 14% brighter than usual.
- It is the second full moon of the month, which is called a "blue moon".
- The Moon will pass through Earth's shadow and take on a reddish tint, which is called a "blood moon".
Here in the Baltimore/DC area, our best chance of seeing it is watching NASA's live feed.
