Director George Pal's movie adaption of H. G. Wells' novel The Time Machine won an Academy Award for Best Special Effects for Gene Warren and Tim Baar at the 33rd ceremony April 17, 1961. It beat The Last Voyage, the only other nominee for the award.
Psycho was nominated for four Academy Awards the same year, but did not receive any.
