The Wow! signal received 1977

On August 15, 1977, a strong radio signal much more powerful than the normal background radio noise was detected by Ohio State University's Big Ear telescope.  It lasted 72 seconds.

A few days later, Jerry Ehman discovered the anomaly while reviewing the data.  He circled the the string of letters "6EQUJ5" and wrote "Wow!" next to it.  The signal has never been detected again and its source has never been determined.  Some people consider it to be the first ever transmission of extraterrestrial origin.  It possibly came from the Sagittarius constellation.
