Dezik and Tsygan
On July 22, 1951, the Soviet Union launched Tsygan (Gypsy) and Dezik, the first animals to reach space and return safely to Earth. They reached an altitude of 110 km, farther than any other higher organism.
Dezik would fly on another flight with a new dog, Lisa, but with tragic results. Thus, Tsygan was retired, and did not fly again.
