Michael J. Smith, born April 30, 1945 in Beaumont, North Carolina, was pilot for the ill-fated Challenger mission (STS-51-L) when it exploded 73 seconds after take-off in January 1986.
He had previously flown combat missions in the Vietnam War as a pilot for the US Navy.
