25th Golden Globe Awards ceremony banned by NBC 1968

I wasn't surprised when I found only two short clips of the 25th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony held February 12, 1968.  According to wikipedia.com, NBC imposed a ban on the telecast because the public had been misled on how the winners were chosen. The advertisers of the broadcast determined the Golden Globe winners.  Then the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would pressure nominees to attend the ceremony, and threatened to give the award "won by a non-attendee to a losing nominee who was at the ceremony".

The ban lasted until 1974.  NBC began broadcasting the ceremonies again, but ended its contract with the HFPA in 1982. 

Anywho, the biggest winner of the night was The Graduate which one five out of the seven Golden Globes it was nominated for.  It won Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical, Best Actress for Anne Bancroft (yea!!), Best Director for Mike Nichols, New Star of the Year-Male for Dustin Hoffman, and New Star of the Year-Female for Katharine Ross.  

Hoffman had been nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical but lost to Richard Harris in Camelot. The Graduate had been nominated for Best Screenplay. 

Bonnie and Clyde was nominated for seven awards but walked away without any. Bummer. 

Carol Burnett won her first Golden Globe for her work on The Carol Burnett Show.

I could only find two short clips of the ceremony, and both featured Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate who had been nominated for her performance in Valley of the Dolls.

"The Carol Burnett Show" wins two Golden Globe Awards 1970

Since I had just turned 7 the September before, I'm not familiar with many of the movies and television shows in 1969, that were nominated and awarded a Golden Globe at the 27th annual ceremony, held February 2, 1969.

I am very familiar with The Carol Burnett Show, which we watched loyally every Saturday night.  The show won two Golden Globes that evening. The first was for Best Television Series: Musical or Comedy, beating Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in.

Carol Burnett tied for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy with Julie Sommars of The Governor & J.J., which I've never heard of either of them. They beat some stiff competition: Lucille Ball, Diahann Carroll, Barbara Eden, and Debbie Reynolds. 

Goldie Hawn won Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture for her performance in Cactus Flower. John Wayne won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama for True Grit. I haven't seen either one of these movies, but I do like Goldie Hawn.

My girls showed up again on the Carol Burnett Show February 8, 1975.  This time they are the panel for the game show Up Your Income as the Shana-Nana-Noonie Sisters.   Ruth, Bonnie, and Anita appeared in the skit.

The Pointer Sisters appear on "The Carol Burnett Show" 1975

My girls the Pointer Sisters appeared on the Carol Burnett Show October 25, 1975, performing How Long? They appeared in a sketch with Harvey Korman playing a Wolfman Jack character called Sheep-man, which he plays hilariously.  The finale was a song and dance arrangement of  Get Me to the Church On Time, with Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence.  The Pointer Sisters showed off their extraordinary talents and beautiful vocals to the upbeat, uplifting performance.  I miss them so much!

Happy birthday, Carol Burnett!

The brilliant comedienne, Carol Burnett, born April 26, 1933 in San Antonio, TX, has been making us laugh for more than 60 years.  Her first appearance was on the Paul Winchell Show in 1955.  She has gone on to star on Broadway and hosted her own television variety show The Carol Burnett Show, which won 9 Golden Globes.  Burnett herself has won 5 Golden Globes, 6 Primetime Emmys, a Grammy, and been nominated for two Tonys.  

May she long make us laugh!

Glenn Miller records "Pennsylvania 6-5000" 1940

Glenn Miller and his orchestra recorded one of their best-selling singles, Pennsylvania 6-5000. April 28, 1940.  It was released in June and rose to Top 5 on the Billboard charts.  It became a big band standard and was covered by many other artists including the Andrews Sisters and Meco.  The Carol Burnett Show included it in her tribute to Glenn Miller in a 1976 episode.  It was featured in an episode of the Muppet Show in 1979.

Remembering Lyle Waggoner (1935-2020)

Lyle Waggoner, the heartthrob who starred on the Carol Burnett Show and Wonder Woman, passed away today.  I always enjoyed seeing him on the Carol Burnett Show, with his tall, dark, handsome looks.  I think he was a great Steve Trevor on Wonder Woman.  He won the TV Land Legend Award in 2005 sharing the award with Carol Burnett, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Bob Mackie.

The Pointer Sisters appear on the Carol Burnett Show 1976

The Carol Burnett Show, season 9, episode 19, which aired January 31, 1976, featured the Pointer Sisters.  They sang That's A-Plenty and a medley of 'Fats' Waller songs with Carol and Vicki Lawrence.

I cannot find a video of the performance but just two months prior, in November 1975, the Pointer Sisters were the guest stars on the show.  They starred in Carol's version of Cinderella called 'Cinderella Gets It On'.

James Garner, Oklahoma actor, born 1928

James Garner, born April 7, 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma, was an award-winning actor whose career spanned more than 50 years.  He's probably best known for his role as Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files for which he won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.  He appeared in comedies such as Support Your Local Gunfighter and Victor/Victoria.  He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Murphy's Romance.

He passed away July 19, 2014 from a massive heart attack brought on by coronary artery disease.

He was a guest on the Carol Burnett Show in 1978.

Remembering Nanette Fabray (1920-2018)

I just found out that comedienne Nanette Fabray passed away this past Thursday, February 22, 2018. She was born October 27, 1920 in San Diego. She started acting at a young age and overcame a significant hearing impairment.  She continued to advocate for rights for deaf and hearing-impaired.

She won 3 Primetime Emmys for her comedic genius.

I remember watching her on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and One Day At a Time, but my fondest memories are of her on the Carol Burnett Show. 

Remembering Jim Nabors (1930-2017)

I just found out that Jim Nabors, great comedic actor and singer, has passed away at 87.  Nabors was born in Sylacauga, Alabama.  He was at home in Hawai'i, his husband and long-time partner Stan Cadwallader said.  I enjoyed seeing him on the Carol Burnett Show, but he was hysterical in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, too.

I loved to hear him sing.

Remembering Mary Tyler Moore (1936-2017)

Beautiful and perky Mary Tyler Moore has passed away today at age 80.  She had suffered from diabetes since age 33 and complications from the disease has finally taken its toll.

I remember watching the Mary Tyler Moore Show every Saturday night in grade school up until high school.  Her show came on right before The Bob Newhart Show and then The Carol Burnett Show.  My saddest recollection: I can't remember the episode in 1974 but word came in half way through the show that my grandmother Anne had passed away.

I remember the final episode when she left the newsroom and turned out the light.  An end to an era.  She truly did turn the world on with a smile!

We will never forget the horrific events that unfolded September 11, 2001 and 14 years later, the shock, pain and anger still linger.  So do we need reminders of that fateful day?  We haven't forgotten December 7, 1941 or April 19, 1995.  Maybe we should also remember good things that happened on this day in history.  For example, the legendary Carol Burnett premiered her long-running variety show on September 11, 1967.  On this anniversary of one of the most heinous acts in history, let's also remember to laugh.
