Remembering Bill Daily (1927-2018)

While we were mourning the loss of Burt Reynolds, another one of our beloved characters from our youth passed away.  Bill Daily, who played Major Roger Healey on I Dream of Jeannie and Howard Borden on the Bob Newhart Show, died September 4 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  His family announced his passing on September 7.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Daily served in the Korean War before going into entertainment, as a musician playing bass.  He appeared in several TV shows, including Bewitched, before being cast as the bumbling, playboy sidekick to Larry Hagman's Major Nelson in I Dream of Jeannie, which also starred Barbara Eden.

Suzanne Pleshette born 1937

Beautiful, versatile and funny actress Suzanne Pleshette, born January 31, 1937 in New York City, is best known and loved for her role as Emily Hartley on the Bob Newhart Show which ran from 1972-1978.

She showed that she could be a dramatic actress as well, receiving a nomination for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy for her role as Leona Helmsley in a TV movie made about the "Queen of Mean".

Suzanne was nominated for her comedy, being nominated twice for a Primetime Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy, for the Bob Newhart Show.

She and her The Birds co-star Veronica Cartwright both appeared as mothers (not in the same episodes though) in Will & Grace, Pleshette playing Karen Walker's mother, Cartwright playing Jack McFarlane's mother.

She received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in January 2008 just days after she passed away from respitory failure.

I love this scene from The Birds.

Remembering Mary Tyler Moore (1936-2017)

Beautiful and perky Mary Tyler Moore has passed away today at age 80.  She had suffered from diabetes since age 33 and complications from the disease has finally taken its toll.

I remember watching the Mary Tyler Moore Show every Saturday night in grade school up until high school.  Her show came on right before The Bob Newhart Show and then The Carol Burnett Show.  My saddest recollection: I can't remember the episode in 1974 but word came in half way through the show that my grandmother Anne had passed away.

I remember the final episode when she left the newsroom and turned out the light.  An end to an era.  She truly did turn the world on with a smile!
