Sir Francis Bacon, born January 22, 1561, developed the scientific method, scientific knowledge based on inductive reasoning and observation of events in nature. Scientists could achieve knowledge by use of a sceptical, methodical approach so not to mislead themselves.
He served as Queen Elizabeth I's legal advisor. James VI knighted him in 1603 and made him Baron Verulam in 1618. Bacon became the first Viscount St. Alban in 1621.
