ZZ Top performed at halftime during Super Bowl XXXI, January 26, 1997 at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Blues Brothers and James Brown began the performance, and ZZ Top came on stage, with a Ford coupe driving across the field.
The bands combined to perform Gimme Some Lovin' as the finale.
The Green Bay Packers beat the New England Patriots 35-21.
ZZ Top released the video for Gimme All Your Lovin' May 21, 1983, broadcasting it on MTV. It was the first single from their super-successful album Eliminator. It was also the first appearance of Billy Gibbon's 1933 Ford Hot Rod. The car appeared in three more videos, making it almost synonymous with the band.
The single reached #37 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #10 on the UK Singles Chart.
ZZ Top won two MTV Music Video awards at the first ever ceremony held September 14, 1984. Their video Sharp Dressed Man won for Best Direction in a Video, beating themselves for Gimme All Your Lovin'. Cyndi Lauper was also nominated in this category for Time After Time.
Their video Legs won Best Group Video, again beating themselves for Sharp Dressed Man.
Cyndi Lauper did win Best Female Video for Girls Just Want to Have Fun, beating herself for Time After Time, Pat Benatar for Love is a Battlefield, and Donna Summer for She Works Hard for the Money.
ZZ Top was also nominated for Best Editing in a Video.
Cyndi Lauper was nominated for Video of the Year, Best New Artist in a Video, Best Concept Video, Best Overall Performance in a Video and Viewer's Choice.
Alan Parsons Project was nominated for Most Experimental Video for Don't Answer Me.
ZZ Top's eighth album Eliminator achieved Diamond status August 7, 1983, selling 10,000,000 copies. It was released in March 1983 and is considered their most popular release. Rolling Stone listed it on its 500 Great Albums of All Time and 39th in the 100 Greatest Album of of the 1980's. Eliminator went Diamond in Canada, and multiple platinum Australia, France, and the United Kingdom.
ZZ Top released their 8th and most successful album Eliminator March 23, 1983. It reached Diamond status with sales over 10 million copies in the U.S. Rolling Stone ranked it as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and it is listed as #39 of the top 100 Greatest Albums of the 80s.
ZZ Top released five singles from the album: Gimme All your Lovin', Got Me Under Pressure, TV Dinners, Sharp Dressed Man and Legs.
The video for Legs won an MTV Music Video Award for Best Group Video in 1984.
ZZ Top (super-rock band) released their 11th studio album, Antenna, January 18, 1994. Its opening track Pincushion was the first single from the album and went to #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the U.S.
Antenna made it to #14 on the Billboard 200. Although Pincushion, Breakaway, and Girl in a T-shirt did better on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart than Fuzzbox Voodoo, it is still my favorite.

The only single released from the album was (Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree and it didn't make it to the Billboard 200. It's good to hear something from their early years and they have maintained their humor throughout the year, incorporating hard rock, Southern rock, and blues into their unique sound.
And of course, they seem to enjoy slipping in those sexual innuendoes.
Dusty Hill, bassist for my guys ZZ Top, celebrates a birthday today. Born in Dallas, May 19, 1949, he grew up in the Lakewood area but ZZ Top was formed in Houston when he and Frank Beard moved there and met Billy Gibbons.
The best ZZ Top album ever and one of the best rock albums ever, Eliminator was released March 23, 1983. It included such monster hits as Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man and Legs. TV Dinners was also released as a single but I don't remember hearing it on the radio. I do remember seeing the video on MTV. ZZ Top's videos from the album featured a souped-up 1933 Ford Coupe and fuzzy guitars that could spin 360°.
Eliminator was certified Diamond, meaning it has sold at least 10,000,000 copies.
ZZ Top released their ninth studio album "Afterburner" October 28, 1985. It was certified Platinum in 1990. "Sleeping Bag" was the biggest hit from the album, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Top 100.
