Celebrating Native American Heritage Month: Joseph Oklahombi, most-decorated WWI soldier from Oklahoma

Joseph Oklahombi, born May 1, 1895 in Bokchito, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (east of present-day Durant, Oklahoma), served as a Choctaw code talker in WWI.  He was assigned to Company D, First Battalion, 141st Regiment, 71st Brigade of the 36th Infantry Division. While in France in 1918, he and 23 other soldiers attacked an enemy position, capturing 171 Germans, killing about 79 more.  He was awarded the Silver Star with Victory Ribbon, and the Croix de Guerre from France. The awards made him the most decorated WWI soldier from Oklahoma.

He passed away in April 1960 after being hit by a truck.

"La Sortie de l'Usine Lumière à Lyon" first motion picture debut 1895

The first motion picture to be shown on a screen to a paying audience, La Sortie de l'Usine Lumière à Lyon (Leaving the Factory) was shown March 22, 1895.  It was presented by Auguste and Louis Lumiere, who filmed workers leaving their own factory in Lyon for lunch.  

Louis Le Prince recorded the oldest film in existence, Roundhay Garden Scene in October 1888.

Marie Blake, actress, born 1895

Marie Blake, born August 21, 1895, in Philadelphia, is probably best known for her role as Grandmama in the Addams Family.  She appeared in bit parts on television from her beginning in 1935 until her retirement in 1966.

She passed away January 14, 1978 in Los Angeles.

It wasn't easy finding clips with Ms. Blake (credited as Blossom Rock on the Addams Family) but I found one that includes the classic Don Rickles.
