"Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" released 1977
The blockbuster from George Lucas that started it all, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, was released in theaters May 25, 1977. We were all asking what happened to episodes I-III. The epic saga starred Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.
Expected to be a bomb, it won six Academy Awards: Best Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects and of course Best Music, Original Score. It also won a Special Achievement Award for Ben Burtt for his sound effects creations for alien and robot voices.
It was nominated for four more Oscars: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Alec Guinness, Best Director and Best Writing for George Lucas.
