"Dante's Peak" released 1997

Dante's Peak, starring Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton, was released February 7, 1997.  The story is about a fictional, dormant volcano, Dante's Peak, Washington, showing signs of erupting.  The eruptions threaten the picturesque town of the same name.

Brosnan is a US geologist sent to assess the volcano to determine if it is preparing to erupt.  Hamilton plays the mayor/coffee shop owner in town.

Dante's Peak didn't receive favorable reviews although it was better at the box office than Volcano, released a couple of months later.  Its visual effects were not nominated for an Academy Award because it had some stiff competition with Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Titanic, which won the award.

Kilauea Caldera, Hawai'i

We landed in Hilo, Hawai'i and drove to Volcano National Park.

Steam vents, where steam is released from ground.

The Kilauea Caldera was active that day and we could see it "splattering".  Notice the orange flames just visible in the center of the photo.

The area around the volcano looks like an alien, barren landscape.

Voyager 1 discovers volcanoes on Io, 1979

Voyager 1, launched September 5, 1977, discovered volcanoes on the Jovian moon Io March 8, 1979.  I remember it causing quite a stir back then because it was the first time active volcanoes had been observed anywhere other than Earth.

On August 25, 2012, Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft (from Earth) to enter interstellar space and continues to send back information, although it takes almost a day for data to reach Earth.  Voyager 1 is expected to continue until about 2025, when it will not be able to supply enough power to operate any of its instruments.
