Iran launches its first satellite, Omid 2009

Iran launched its first domestically manufactured satellite Omid February 2, 2009, becoming the ninth country to do so.  It was a 16" cube weighing about 60 lb.  It was to monitor natural disasters since Iran is prone to earthquakes, and to improve its telecommunications.

Omid orbited for about seven weeks and re-entered Earth's atmosphere in April 2009.

Oklahoma Earthquakes: Blame man, not Mother Nature

NASA has turned its eyes in the sky earthward to study the rash of earthquakes that have rocked the Sooner State since 2009.  Their conclusions support the number of previous studies that link wastewater injections into porous geographical formations underground, i.e. human-induced activities, to earthquakes.

NASA's study focused on the largest earthquakes, the 5.7 magnitude near Prague in 2011 and the 5.8 magnitude near Pawnee, last September 3. Using their radar satellites allows them to see and study details of the earthquakes that were not previously matched and do not reach teh surface.

You can read the article below but the results of their study indicates "a human-induced earthquake resulting from wastewater injection, rather than a naturally caused quake".  The article opens with a statement saying "Oklahomans are no strangers to Mother Nature's whims" but as the article continues, it is clear Mother Nature has nothing to do with the Sooner State's earthquakes.

Pirate Paradise destroyed by earthquake 1692

On the morning of June 7, 1692, the  pirate haven of Port Royal, Jamaica (or Sin City, as it had been referred to) was destroyed by a series of earthquakes.  Later, a tsunami washed was left of the city into the ocean. The sandy soil became liquefied during the quakes and buildings sank into the ground.
People who weren't killed in the earthquake or tsunami died from diseases and injuries.  Port Royal was never rebuilt.

Oklahoma is "Earthquake Alley" - 60 Minutes

Bill Whitaker, 60 Minutes correspondence, aired a report this past Sunday, May 8.  No surprise that Gov. Failing and Kim Hatfield of the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association looked like the brain-dead politicians we expect.  Scientists and experts say that disposing of waste-water, created from fracking, is responsible for the rise in earthquakes.  Hatfield says it's "inconclusive".  How stupid can he be?  Where is his science?

Oklahoma hit with 70 earthquakes in a week!

USA Today is reporting that Oklahoma was hit with 70 earthquakes last week, the largest, a 4.8 magnitude, near Fairview.  The Oklahoma Geological Survey says that it is "very likely that the majority of recent earthquakes" are linked to the practice of fracking.  Don't get much past these guys.  You can tell they have college degrees.  It's only a matter of time before Governor Mary Failing blames President Obama for the earthquakes. 

What's Inhofe's take on this?  He's made it clear that he doesn't believe in science, so how does he account for it?  President Obama, I suppose?

The US Geological Survey have linked fracking to earthquakes for over 50 years.  When will the "Big One" hit?

Environmentalist groups threaten to sue 4 Oklahoma energy companies

Yesterday, NewsOK.com reported Washington-based Public Justice and the Oklahoma Sierra Club  plan to sue  SandRidge Energy Inc., Devon Energy Corp., Chesapeake Energy Corp. and New Dominion LLC.  They're filling the lawsuit under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which allows citizens to sue over hazardous waste.

The number of earthquakes in Oklahoma have skyrocketed over the past few years, and is on track to experience over 900 earthquakes this year, putting it ahead of California.  Several studies have shown 'fracking' the process of injecting the soil with toxic chemicals to recover oil is most likely the reason for the increased seismicity.

Chad Warmington, president of the Oklahoma Oil and Gas Association, dismisses the suit as unnecessary and unwarranted, saying the environmentalists are out to "completely destroy the production of oil and natural gas in the United States"

Seriously, Chad-eroo?  That's the only reason you can think of?  Granted the environmentalists might not  have claim to any monetary rewards, but think of all the people who have had homes damaged from dozens of earthquakes.  What happens if fracking is allowed to continue?  With the crust of the Earth being cracked and drilled in a relatively small area, it's liable to fail at some point.  Yes, we understand you are listening(?) to the Oklahoma Geological Survey and you claim "the actions taken by the commission have been strong, decisive and based on good science".  Don't you mean 'in spite of good science'?

The actions have been to continue business as usual.  But 900 earthquakes per year is not usual.
