Bion 10 (Kosmos 2229) launched 1992

 

Bion 10, or Kosmos 2229, a Russian spacecraft as part of a multinational effort, was launched December 29, 1992.  It carried two monkeys, plants, cell cultures, insects, and amphibians. The Rhesus monkeys were trained to activate food and juice dispensers, to operate a foot pedal to study muscles responses, and to make hand and head movements in response to visual stimuli.

The countries involved were Canada, France, Germany, Lithuania, Netherlands, China, Russia, Ukraine, US, Uzbekistan, and the European Space Agency.

The spacecraft orbited Earth for almost 12 days, before landing successfully on January 10, 1993.

Juan, cai monkey, sent into space by Argentina 1969

On December 23, 1969, Argentina sent Juan, a cai monkey native to a region of the country, into space.  The rocket ascended to 82 km and he was recovered successfully.  On February 1, 1970, a female cai monkey was sent to a higher altitude but she was lost when the parachutes failed to open.

Marfusa, first rabbit in space, 1959

On July 2, 1959, a Soviet R2 rocket blasted off taking a very special cargo.  On board was Marfusa (Little Martha), the first rabbit in space.  She traveled with her two canine companions, Otvazhnaya (Brave) and Snezhinka (Snowflake).  They were successfully retrieved in good health after their trip into space, 132 miles up.
