Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" debuts 1880

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky debuted his The Year 1812 Solemn Overture, Op. 49, better known as the 1812 Overture in Moscow, Russia August 20, 1880.  He later conducted a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

He composed it to commemorate Russia's successful defense against an invasion by Napoleon in 1812.  It is best known for the finale which includes cannon fire and chimes.  It has become on of his most popular works along with the Nutcracker Suite.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk which was in what is Russia today.  It's generally accepted that he was gay, in an era and country where such behavior wasn't accepted.  The Soviets even tried to portray him as heterosexual.  But he was a hottie! 

His "Nutcracker Suite", which he wasn't too fond of and didn't enjoy immediate success, is now one of his most beloved pieces.  It is a staple of ballet companies during the Christmas season.
