Oklahoma committee approves public funds to be diverted to private schools - WTF?

In a string of brain-dead, head-up-ass actions, Oklahoma State Representative Rob Standridge (Republican, gasp.) pushed a bill that would allow public funds to go to private schools.  It passed the Senate Education Committee by a vote of 8-7, and now goes to the Senate Appropriations Committee.  At a time when the education system is in shambles, teachers' salaries are at the poverty level and educators are fleeing the state like rats off a burning ship, Standridge has the audacity to pull a stunt like this.  An amendment limits the bill to Oklahoma, Tulsa and Cleveland counties, but a majority of students rely on public education.

It follows years of Oklahoma politicians trying to keep the constiuents uneducated.

Oklahoma Public Health Committee sets women's rights back to the Dark Ages

State Representative Justin Humphreys (Republican - duh) introduced a bill into a Public Health Committee in the Oklahoma House of Representatives that would require a father's permission for women to have an abortion.  It's been described as the most oppressive law against women in US history.  The bill does make exceptions for rape, incest and mother's health, but not for women in abusive relationships.

Humphreys earlier called women "hosts" to unborn children, because he couldn't find a better word.  He has apologized but the damage has been done.  Women will not have control of their own bodies.  I cannot understand what motivated him and the committee to introduce and pass such a horrendous bill.

Oklahoma Republican escalates fear-mongering, hate and Islamaphobia

Oklahoma State Representative John Bennett sets the needle back to "Zero Days" since Oklahoma has become a national embarrassment.  This week he initiated a study titled: “Radical Islam, Shariah Law, the Muslim Brotherhood and the radicalization process.”

As the release points out, “Bennett said he’s been ridiculed for his beliefs, but he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect Oklahoma and U.S. citizens from the real and present danger of radical Islam and its subsidiary groups.”

The photo above is more frightening to me than Muslims.  I  still remember April 19, 1995 (apparently Bennett has conveniently forgotten), still considered one of the worst acts of domestic terrorism.

Here is the response from Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OK)  to the Islamophobic atmosphere at the so-called “study”:
Representative John Bennett is shamefully wasting taxpayer money to promote his own biased agenda, said CAIR-OK Executive Director Adam Soltani. This hearing was a new low for Representative Bennett, as his guests presented a biased narrative that achieves nothing more than demonizing and marginalizing the Oklahoma Muslim Community.

Oklahoma House Bill Targets "Underperforming" Schools

The overwhelmingly Republican House of Representatives of Oklahoma is showing their level of education and lack thereof.  They are considering a bill to "take over" underperforming schools.  Originally, the bill called for firing the principal and at least half the staff, closing the school or re-opening it as a charter school.  Fortunately, that has been removed but the state will still step in.  The underperforming legislators have cut funding for education so much that soon all schools in Oklahoma will be considered underperforming.

Okla. State Rep Sally Kern - I just washed my brain and now I can't do a THING with it!

Thanks to Scooter, who posted a speech made by Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern on his Blog. The site address is posted below:

http://scootersville.blogspot.com/2008/03/shame-on-sally.html

In this three minute rant, she talks about the 'homosexual agenda' and makes claims that are so outrageous, they ring false to anyone with an IQ above, oh let's say, 51. She says that gays are recruiting people as young as 2 and that studies show that any society that embraces homosexuality has only lasted for a few decades. Where is she getting this? What studies? Is she for real?

Having been born and raised in Oklahoma, I know there is rampant homophobia, but never realized there was such rampant stupidity! I've seen billboards that scream don't believe the liberal press, but this shows that you can't believe the conservative press either. None of her claims have basis. For example, she claims that the city council of Eureka Springs is controlled by homosexuals, and "do you know what's happened there?" She doesn't tell us. As far as I know, Eureka Springs is still on the map and hasn't been destroyed by fire and brimstone.

I wonder if the Eureka Springs City Council found out she was an illegal alien?
