USA For Africa records "We Are The World" 1985

USA for Africa, a supergroup of America's top popular musicians, recorded We Are the World, for raise money for the famine in Ethiopia January 28, 1985.  It was the brain child of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, who wrote the song, and Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian produced it. 

Recording began about 10:30pm that night after the American Music Awards ceremony held that night.  The final recording was made about 8am the following morning.

The song was released March 7 and became the eighth best-selling single of all time, with a sales in excess of 20 million copies. Among the performers that night were Billy Joel who had a short solo, and Anita, June, and Ruth Pointer were in the chorus.

Lucy, a spacecraft launched October 16, 2021, will eventually pass by and photograph eight asteroids.  Today and in two years time, it will swing by Earth and pick up speed to help it reach asteroid Donaldjohanson, named after the scientist who discovered the Lucy hominin fossils in Ethiopia, in 2025.

In 2027, Lucy will arrive in the L4 Trojan cloud, a cluster of asteroids that orbit ahead of Jupiter in the same path.  Lucy will visit four Trojans, Eurybates and its moon Queta, Polymele, Leucus, and Orus.

Lucy will return to Earth in 2031 for another gravity boost and in 2023, will visit Patroclus and its satellite Menoetius in the L5 Trojan cloud, which follows Jupiter. After that, NASA will decide whether or not to extend Lucy's mission.

Celebrating Black History Month - Arnold Josiah Ford, first black rabbi

Arnold Josiah Ford, born in Barbados, April 23, 1877, was the first black rabbi in the United States.  He wrote many songs for the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Community League.  He co-authored the Unversal Ethiopian Anthem and published the Universal Ethiopian Hymnal in 1920.

He traveled to Ethiopia with a group of black Jews in 1930 where they acquired 800 acres of land for uniting black Jews of the Diaspora with their counterparts already in Ethiopia.

Rabbi Ford died in Ethiopia in 1935.
