"The Music Man" wins six Tony Awards 1958



Meredith Wilson's musical comedy The Music Man, which debuted on Broadway in 1957, took home five Tony Awards at the 12th annual ceremony held April 13, 1958.  It won:
Best Musical
Best Actor in a Musical for Robert Preston
Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for David Burns
Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Barbara Cook
Best Conductor and Musical Director for Herbert Green

It had been nominated for 
Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Iggie Wolfington
Best Director for Morton DaCosta
Best Choreography for Onna White
Best Stage Technician for Sammy Knapp

Helen Hayes won her second Best Actress in a Play Tony for her performance in Time Remembered.
Anne Bancroft won her first Tony for Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her performance in Two for the Seesaw.

"Annie" wins seven Tony Awards 1977


Annie, which debuted on Broadway of April 1977, won seven Tony Awards at the 31st annual ceremony June 5, 1977. I've never seen the stage production, but I did see the movie version with Albert Finney, Anne Reinking, and Carol Burnett.

The 1977 Broadway version won Tonys for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical for Thomas Meehan, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Dorothy Loudon (as Miss Hannigan), Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre for Charles Strouse (music) and Martin Charnin (lyrics), Best Choreography for Peter Gennaro, Best Scenic Design for David Mitchell, and Best Costume Design for Theoni Aldredge. 

Annie had also been nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Reid Shelton (as Daddy Warbucks), Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Andrea McArdle (as Annie), and Best Direction of a Musical for Martin Charnin.

"Hello, Dolly" wins 10 Tony Awards 1964



Hello, Dolly, which debuted at the Fisher Theater in Detroit in November 1963 and moved to Broadway in 1964, won ten Tony Awards at the 18th annual ceremony May 24, 1964.

Hello, Dolly won:
Best Musical
Best Producer (Musical) for David Merrick
Best Book (Musical) for Michael Stewart
Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theater for Jerry Herman
Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Carol Channing
Best Direction of a Musical for Gower Champion
Best Choreography for Gower Champion
Best Conductor and Musical Director for Shepard Coleman
Best Scenic Design for Oliver Smith
Best Costume Design for Freddy Wittop

The only category for which Hello, Dolly was nominated but lost was Best Performance by a Supporting or Featured Actor in a Musical for Charles Nelson Reilly.  (I demand a recount!)

"South Pacific" wins 9 Tony Awards 1950


South Pacific, one of the greatest Broadway musicals from Rogers and Hammerstein, took home 9 Tony Awards at the 4th ceremony April 9, 1950.  

It won for Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical (Ezio Pinza), Best Actress in a Musical (Mary Martin), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Myron McCormick), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Juanita Hall), Best Producer, Best Director (Joshua Logan), Best Libretto (Oscar Hammerstein), and Best Original Score (Richard Rodgers).

"Fiddler on the Roof" wins two Golden Globes 1972


Fiddler on the Roof won two Golden Globes at the 29th annual ceremony February 6, 1972.  It won for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.  Topol won for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Comedy or Musical.  It received two more nominations.  Paul Mann was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lazar Wolf.  Norman Jewison was nominated for Best Director.

Other nominations that night: Angela Lansbury for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her performance in Bedknobs and Broomsticks.  Cloris Leachman as Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in the Last Picture Show.  The Andromeda Strain was nominated for Best Original Score for Gil Melle.

"The Sound of Music" wins 5 Tony Awards 1960


The Sound of Music won five awards at the 14th Tony Awards held April 24, 1960.  It tied with Fiorello for Best Musical.

Mary Martin won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her role as Maria Von Trapp, beating Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress.  Patricia Neway won Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as the Mother Abbess.

The Sound of Music also won for Best Conductor and Musical Director, and Best Scenic Design (Musical).

Theodore Bikel and Kurt Kasznar were nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.  Lauri Peters was nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Liesl Von Trapp.  The musical was also nominated for Best Direction of a Musical.
