"The Secrets of Isis" debuts 1975

A brand-new superhero debuted in her first episode, Secrets of Isis, September 6, 1975.  Gorgeous Joanna Cameron appeared as a science teacher (Andrea Thomas), who inherits the power of the Egyptian goddess Isis.  She uses those powers to fight evil.

The Lights of Mystery Mountain, the first episode also starring Brian Cutler and Joanna Pang, had Miss Thomas and Isis investigating UFOs in the mountains above Los Angeles.

The Secrets of Isis lasted for just 1 1/2 seasons before being inexplicably cancelled, despite its popularity. 

It was the first television series to feature a female superhero as the main character, airing just a few weeks before Wonder Woman starring Lynda Carter in November 1975.

Also, Isis was not a superhero that had appeared in DC Comics, Marvel Comics or any other publication prior to the show. 

Happy birthday, Raquel Welch!

Raquel Welch, born September 5, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, burst onto the scene in a skimpy, furry bikini in the movie One Million Years B.C. in 1966.  She became an international sex symbol and every boy's adolescent fantasy. 

I enjoyed her in The Three Musketeers, her role in which won her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. I also loved The Four Musketeers, except that her character got killed off.

Arkansas Gov. Faubus sends Nat'l Guard to prevent the Little Rock Nine from entering high school 1957

In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation of schools was unconstitutional, but integration did not come easily. 

In 1957, nine black students attempted to enroll at Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas.  On September 4, 1957, Governor Faubus mobilized the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the students from entering, preventing integration.  To "preserve the peace". 

The nine students were physically and mentally abused by the white students, but they persevered.  President Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army, then later, federalized the Arkansas National Guard and ordered them to support the integration and protect the black students.

"Holiday Inn" released 1942

Holiday Inn, released in the US September 4, 1942, is best known for its score by Irving Berlin and the debut of White Christmas.  Starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, it won an Academy Award for Best Original Song, White Christmas.

The success of White Christmas led to the movie of the same name in 1954, also starring Bing Crosby. 

The American Film Institute listed White Christmas as No. 5 in its list of 100 Years...100 songs.

Merritt Butrick, Star Trek actor, born 1959

Actor Merritt Butrick, born September 3, 1959 in Gainesville, Florida, who played Dr. David Marcus, Captain Kirk's son in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, left us too early.  He appeared in Star Trek II and Star Trek III: Search for Spock. 

He appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Symbiosis. Unfortunately, he passed away in March 1989 from AIDS.

Billy Joel releases his "Greatest Hits - Volume l & Volume ll" 1985

My man Billy released his Greatest Hits - Volume 1 & Volume ll album September 2, 1985.  It has since been certified Double Diamond, selling over 11.5 million copies.  It is tied with Pink Floyd's The Wall and Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV for the third most certified album of all time.

It was released with two previously un-issued songs: You're Only Human (Second Wind) and The Night is Still Young.

Christa McAuliffe, Challenger astronaut, born 1948

Christa McAuliffe, born September 2, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts, was the first teacher to be chosen to go into space.  She was selected to participate in the NASA Teacher in Space Project.

She was launched aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger (STS-51-L) January 28, 1986.  Unfortunately, the shuttle exploded just seconds after launch, killing everyone on board.
